How to play the imposter game online
- Pick a category and send one link. Food, animals, places, jobs, sports, things at home, transport or Christmas, or mix them all. Everyone joins on their own phone with the link or a 4-letter code.
- Everyone gets the same secret word, except one. The imposter only sees the category, and nobody can peek, because every card is on its own phone.
- Say one word each. In the same room you go round and say it out loud. Playing apart, everyone types their word.
- Vote out the imposter. A caught imposter can still steal a point by guessing the word. Five rounds take about ten minutes.
Which words are in the imposter game?
Everyday words everyone knows, in eight categories. The host picks one in the lobby, or plays them all mixed.
- Food: pizza, pancake, sushi, popcorn and many more.
- Animals: penguin, giraffe, octopus, kangaroo and many more.
- Places: beach, airport, zoo, castle and many more.
- Jobs: pilot, chef, astronaut, magician and many more.
- Sports: tennis, surfing, bowling, karate and many more.
- At home: sofa, toothbrush, fridge, umbrella and many more.
- Transport: helicopter, submarine, tractor, rocket and many more.
- Christmas: reindeer, snowman, gingerbread, advent calendar and many more.
Playing at Christmas? Christmas Imposter starts straight away with the Christmas words.
Is the imposter game a social deduction game?
Yes. Like Werewolf and Mafia, one hidden player bluffs and the group has to find them by talking. The difference: a round takes two minutes, you need only 3 players, and nobody has to sit out as the game leader.
- Werewolf or Mafia suit a big group of 8 or more with one person running the night.
- Imposter suits 3 to 8, and the phones deal the cards, so everyone plays.
- Want it with sport? The same bluff with players instead of words: Football Imposter, Basketball Imposter and four more sports.

How many players do you need?
At least 3, up to 8. It is free for up to 4, and a Host Pass opens it to 8.
What does the imposter see?
Only the category, for example Animals. Everyone else sees the word itself.
Can we play the imposter game online, apart?
Yes. Pick "Play online" when you start, and everyone types their word instead of saying it out loud.
Do we need to download an app?
No. The game runs in the browser on any phone, tablet or computer. Send the link and everyone is in.
Is it a social deduction game like Werewolf?
Yes. One hidden player bluffs and the rest find them by talking, like Werewolf or Mafia, but a round takes two minutes and 3 players are enough.
Can the whole family play?
Yes. The words are everyday words everyone knows, from pizza to penguins, so nobody needs to know anything special to bluff.
Is it free?
