How do you play Guess the Hockey Player?
Everyone sees the same clues about a mystery hockey player, one at a time, and the first to pick the right name out of three scores a point. It is not a once-a-day puzzle: you play round after round, live, against your friends.
- Send the link. One of you starts a game and shares the link or the 4-letter code. Play with up to 4 friends for free, or play alone.
- Watch the clues drop. A new clue appears every 7 seconds: three facts, then the country, the position and the season.
- Guess when you dare. Pick one of three names. Right, and you score a point. Wrong, and everyone else scores a point and the round ends.
- First to 10 wins. Playing alone? You get 10 rounds, and the game counts how many you got.
The earlier you guess, the more you risk. Wait for the last clue, and someone faster may take the point first.
What are the clues?
Six clues per player, from the hardest to the easiest, all about the player's best season.
| Clue | What you see |
|---|---|
| Facts 1–3 | A trophy, a record or a milestone from that season |
| Country | The player's flag |
| Position | Goaltender, defenceman, centre or wing |
| Season | The year of the best season, or "plays today" for current stars |
Current stars and legends are mixed, and the two wrong names are usually from the same position and the same era, so you can't guess from the position alone.
Can you play Guess the Hockey Player online with friends?
Yes. Everyone plays on their own phone, so it works on the same sofa, over a video call or straight from the group chat. Want it on the big screen? Open deadlineday.app/tv on the TV and everyone scans the code.
What else can you play in the same room?
- Hockey Imposter. Everyone gets the same hockey player except one bluffer. Hockey Imposter
- A live draft. Everyone gets 100M and bids for the same players — the stronger six wins. Hockey draft game
- Another sport. The same game with footballers or basketball players. Guess the Footballer · Guess the Basketball Player
Then put a price on them: the ice hockey auction
Same group, same hockey players, more at stake. Hockey draft game
- Create a game and send the link. Send the link during the first intermission. Everyone joins on their own phone, on the couch or from the stands.
- Bid on one hockey player at a time. Goaltenders, defencemen, centres and wingers hit the block one at a time, from the 1945 era to this season. Miss out on the good goaltenders and you will feel it.
- Put your six on the ice. Three periods, played out goal by goal. Tied after 60 minutes? A shootout decides it, and the stronger six wins.
More ice hockey games for the same group
- The live auction. Everyone gets 100M and bids for the same hockey players. Build the stronger six and win.
- This or That. Two hockey players, same position, same era. One of you picks in secret, the rest guess which.
- Imposter. Everyone gets the same hockey player except one bluffer. One word each, then vote.
Why hockey fans keep playing Guess the player
- An ice hockey tip. Birthplace and draft spot show up a lot in the facts, so a born-in clue can do half the work. Then the position splits goaltenders, defencemen and forwards.
- Fast rounds. A clue every 7 seconds, so a round is over in less than a minute.
- Risk decides it. Guess on the first fact and you might steal the point. Guess wrong and everyone else gets it.
- 166 hockey players, back to 1945. A hockey player from decades ago can come up right after one from this season.
- Alone or together. Play ten rounds solo to warm up, then send the link and beat your friends.
- No ads. Ever. Just the clues and the clock.
