How do you play Esports This or That?
One of you secretly picks one of two pro players, and everyone else scores a point by guessing which one.
- Send the link. One of you starts a game and shares the link or the 4-letter code. You need at least two players, and it is free for up to 4.
- Two pro players appear. Always the same position and the same era, and about the same level, so the choice is hard.
- One of you picks in secret. The picker has 12 seconds to choose a favourite. Nobody else can see it.
- Everyone else guesses. You get 12 seconds too. Every right guess scores a point, and then the next player becomes the picker.
A game is 6 to 12 rounds, depending on how many you are, so everyone picks at least once. The player with the most points knows the group best.
Esports This or That or Would You Rather?
Both ask you to choose between two. The difference is the twist: here you do not just say your answer, you score by reading your friends.
| Would You Rather | Esports This or That here | |
|---|---|---|
| Who answers | Everyone says their pick | One picks in secret, the rest guess |
| The pairs | Someone has to think them up | The game draws two players from the same position and era |
| Who wins | Nobody keeps score | The best mind reader in the group |
Can you play it online with friends?
Yes. Everyone plays on their own phone, so it works on the same sofa, over a video call or straight from the group chat. Want it on the big screen? Open deadlineday.app/tv on the TV and everyone scans the code.
What else can you play in the same room?
- Guess the Esports Player. Clues drop one at a time, and the first to name the pro scores. Guess the Esports Player
- Esports Imposter. Everyone gets the same pro except one bluffer. Esports Imposter
- A live esports auction. Everyone gets 100M and bids for the same pros — the stronger five wins. Esports auction
Then put a price on them: the esports auction
Same group, same pro players, more at stake. Esports auction
- Create a game and send the link. Paste the link in your Discord or the squad chat. Everyone joins on their own phone or in the browser, between matches.
- Bid on one pro player at a time. AWPers, in-game leaders, entry fraggers and riflers from 5v5 tactical shooters come up one at a time, from the 2013 scene to today. Two teams after the same star AWPer is where the budget burns.
- Pick your five on the server. The final is best of three maps to 13 rounds. Almost level? It goes to 2-1 and overtime, and the stronger five wins.
More esports games for the same group
- The live auction. Everyone gets 100M and bids for the same pro players. Build the stronger five and win.
- Guess the player. Six clues about a mystery pro player, one at a time. Name them first — a wrong guess hands everyone else the point.
- Imposter. Everyone gets the same pro player except one bluffer. One word each, then vote.
Why esports fans keep playing This or That
- An esports tip. Two AWPers from the same era is the hardest pair: the flashy one or the steady one? That is the whole argument.
- It's about your friends. You score by knowing which pro player your mate would pick, not by knowing the most stats.
- Fair pairs. The two pro players always share position and era and sit close in level, so there is no easy pick.
- Everyone picks. The picker changes every round, so the quiet one gets their turn too.
- Arguments included. Every round ends with someone defending a pick they can't explain.
- No ads. Ever. Two names, twelve seconds, nothing else.
